Did you know that the world record for the loudest burp is 109.9 decibels, which is louder than a motorcycle? Did you know that the longest burp ever recorded is one minute and 13 seconds long? Now, it’s likely you don’t burp this loud or this long, but when you do burp, do you wonder, “Why do I burp, how is a burp formed, and is it bad to hold it in?” Well, let’s start off with the basics: what causes burping?

One cause of burping is swallowing air, which occurs when you eat or drink too quickly and when you talk while you eat. Burping allows your body to release the excess air from your stomach. Burping is also caused by feeling nervous. Have you ever started burping or felt stomach pain right before a presentation, interview, or a first-date? Feeling nervous leads to hyperventilation, which is sudden heavy breathing. By breathing heavily, this causes your body to take in more air than is needed. Thus, your natural gas ratios are off, and your body releases the excess air by burping. In addition, feeling anxious can interfere with your digestive system because of the stress it puts on your stomach. If your digestive system isn’t digesting your food properly, this can lead to excess gas. Other causes of burping include medical conditions such as an ulcergallbladder problem, or heartburn.

One reason your body forms burps is because there’s excess air in your stomach from either eating too quickly or talking while eating.

Burping three or four times after eating is normal. If you’re someone who burps more often, you may wonder, “How can I reduce my burping?” One way is to breathe more slowly. For about 30 minutes a day, you can practice slowly breathing in through your nose and releasing through your mouth. Breathing slowly can not only reduce burping, but also calm yourself if you feel nervous. Another way to reduce burping is to eat healthier foods. Eating more healthily will allow your body to digest food more easily. Thus, your stomach will function properly, and there’ll be less excess air in your stomach. Furthermore, drinking water and exercising are great ways to reduce burping and anxiety.

Is it bad to hold in burps? Dr. Ben Kim, who manages a health and wellness website, argues that you should not hold in burps. He states that holding in burps can harm your cells because of toxins entering the walls of your small intestine and bloodstream. Furthermore, Dr. Oz also argues that you shouldn’t resist the urge to burp because it can cause bloating and discomfort due to the increased air in your stomach.

So, should you hold in your burp or let it out? While burping can be seen as rude or disgusting, it is a natural process. So if you do have to let out a burp, I suggest doing it quietly or excusing yourself before burping (or maybe after burping if it’s too late).
