Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who focus on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders with a particular emphasis on the spine.  They may order X-rays or run tests to diagnose and treat patients. However, chiropractors do not prescribe medication and instead assist the body to heal itself.  This is done using a variety of techniques, such as spinal adjustments, to treat patients and promote overall health and well-being. There is some controversy surrounding the validity of chiropractic as a medical treatment. Some argue that it is a pseudoscience while others claim that it is a safe and effective treatment option.

An argument against the validity of chiropractors is the lack of scientific evidence supporting many of their claims. A review of the literature conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration, an organization that evaluates healthcare interventions, found that there is limited evidence to support the use of spinal manipulation for the treatment of lower back pain. The study also found that while spinal manipulation may help provide some short-term relief of neck or back pain, it may not be clinically significant.

On the other hand, there is evidence to suggest that chiropractic may be an effective treatment option for certain conditions. A systematic review published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic care was as effective as other treatments for lower back pain and may also be beneficial for patients with headaches, neck pain, and other neuromuscular conditions. Additionally, a similar review found that spinal manipulation was effective for the treatment of acute low back pain especially when comparing it to using just oral medications for pain.

Chiropractic can be a safe and – possibly – effective treatment option for certain neuromuscular disorders. While there is limited evidence to support its use in all situations, there is evidence to suggest that it may be effective for the treatment of low back pain and other neuromuscular conditions, especially if they are acute. It is important to note that chiropractic may not be appropriate for all patients. As with any medical treatment, it is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with other healthcare providers before seeking chiropractic care. Some people may experience temporary discomfort after a chiropractic adjustment, and in rare cases, there have been reports of serious complications such as stroke or spinal cord injury. However, the overall risk of serious complications from chiropractic care is low, and many people do find relief from their symptoms through chiropractic treatment.
