Modern-day medicine is a practice of continuous evolution and adaptation, with an ever-growing plethora of resources and knowledge. The shift of remote and virtual preferences over recent years has resulted in one particular facet of rapid growth: home health monitoring. With an overarching goal of reaching a broader scope of communities with more affordable forms of healthcare, Dr. W. Hong Yeo has developed new health devices that have made monitoring one’s various health systems much more manageable.

One notably ingenious device is a heart monitoring apparatus that uses a portable, soft bioelectronic system (SIS). Entirely wireless, it adheres to the skin and measures real-time physiological data– including respiratory rate, heart rate, and heart electrical activity– resulting from both mild and excessive daily activities. It can be worn comfortably and filters out disruptive and artificial data. For those needing to monitor cardiac conditions, this device would enable patients to interact with their physician remotely and gain a better understanding of their health and any potential underlying trends.

The application of personalized health data within a day-to-day capacity applies to sleep evaluation as well. Not unlike the heart monitor, Dr. Yeo utilizes the sensors to examine sleep patterns from the comfort of a patient’s home. This tool yields higher-quality data collection since people have the ability to sleep in a familiar environment without being strapped to a sensitive and uncomfortable machine. The improved data could thus lead to more accurate diagnoses and benefit a larger volume of people.

Another device measures brain-machine interface through a brain monitor. This technology has the capacity to go around the hairs for maximum contact between the monitor and the scalp. That information is then wirelessly transferred to another device,  making data collection quick and straightforward.  This brain monitor empowers users with effortless, unrestricted access to pertinent data that would have normally been difficult to obtain.

Not only are these instruments significantly more convenient for patients and doctors alike, but they provide a range of data that enables the viewer to make more holistic inferences about an individual’s health. This new age of medicine allows patients to reign greater control over their wellness, leading to an overall improvement in their quality of life.
